Dietary Supplements

I can't remember a time when I didn't take at least a multivitamin every day. Over the years, a variety of different supplements have come in and out depending on my needs at the time. Some I began taking for a specific reason and then continued to take for maintenance such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin to protect my joints from the beating they get from running.

When Phantom was diagnosed with cancer this summer, supplements took on an entirely different meaning. My husband and I started taking CoQ10 again, a higher dose of vitamin d3 and are looking into krill oil supplements as well.

A friend of mine asked me to write down what a take because now she's on the supplement bandwagon after she started taking krill oil for her cholesterol levels and heart and she suddenly feels so much better. So much better that she recently signed up for an Ironman triathlon!

The former model, Carol Alt is really into supplements. I saw her on her health show recently and she says she keeps all her supplements in boxes and has a morning box and an evening box full of supplements. She must take 100's a day! She also eats a raw diet most of the time..

All of this made me wonder exactly how many supplements I take a day. I decided to write it down and here is my list of daily supplements.

1. 2 a day multi-vitamins for hair, skin and nails (from Life Extensions)
2. Calcium with Vitamin D3 and other minerals
3. 2 or 3 per day amino acid supplements (as well as protein powder in my green smoothie.)
More than that when I'm training hard and long such as for an Ironman triathlon.
3. Chlorella (it helps with heavy metal detox among other things)
4. N Acetyl Cysteine (also helps with detox and lung function)
5. Turmeric (anti cancer properties) I take a pill form at night and add the powder form to my smoothie.
6. Cinnamon (control blood sugar) I take a pill form at night and add the powder form to my smoothie.
7. Garlic (heart health and anti cancer) I take the pill form but we also add it to some of our food.
8. Glucosamine with Chondroitin and MSM (joint health)
9. CLA (helps body burn fat)
10. L-carnitine (also helps body use fat stores for energy) Want to loose weight? Try this!
11.Green tea fat burner pill (fat burning and antioxidant!) Same as above!
12. Fish Oil (heart health, anti cancer, just good stuff to take!)
13. Flaxseed (same as above) I use to take this as a pill but now I ground the real stuff up and add it to my green smoothie.
14. CoQ10 (heart health and energy) I use to take this for endurance, now I take it for it's anti cancer
     and heart health benefits)
15. B12
16. Folic acid
17. Singulair - I have to take this for asthma
18. Reservatrol - I use to take this in pill form but now I get it in liquid form aka red wine!

On my list of supplements to purchase is:

1. Krill oil with astaxanthin ( it's a huge part of my cats anti cancer protocol and that's enough reason to
    purchase for me!)
2. Spirulina (super healthy, anti cancer food)

When I race I also take an electrolyte/salt supplement and another supplement that helps the body get rid of lactic acid called Vo2 Max both from carbopro.com.

We get almost all of our other supplements either at the local drug store or at Lifeextension.com.

So it looks like I take about 18 dietary supplements per day, unless I forgot one. I don't think I have. In the past, I've taken an extra C or E or zinc or evening primrose or selenium, etc. Vit. C and E is in my regular multi- vitamin though. I would take extra if I felt I needed an immune system boost.

Have I left a really important supplement out that I really, really need to be taking? Please let me know! I'll add it to my "supplements to purchase" list.

Thanks in advance.

Ironman Triathlon Motivation

I'm sharing these because I've been sick the past week and my training has been really kind of sucky.  I mean, not just the usual sucky, but really, really sucky.   I did my first real, non-treadmill run today since the race the Sunday before last and I'm feeling very weak.

Luckily, I have plenty of inspiration out there on the Internet to keep me going.  I did have to laugh at myself today as I was thinking about signing up for a 500 mile bike race that is in April.  I mean, REALLY!!

I think I better concentrate on getting well and then actually getting on my bike and riding for an hour first.  Doing a century ride would be next since I haven't done one in two years.

Where do I get these crazy ideas??  And make them STOP!!

Ironman Hipster Kitty

I was feeling inspired to create more Hipster Kitty memes.   So.....  I created some Ironman Hipster Kitty memes....  The 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run Ironman Hipster Kitty.  Of course, The Boy made me get his approval before I posted this.  He said the first two were "ok, but kind of stretching it, most weren't too bad, but the last one was the best."  Even got a laugh out of the hipster boy and his approval to post.  He said he wasn't going to let me "ruin" Hipster Kitty.

Hipster Kitty is way to hip for a regular Ironman Triathlon.

RIP Whitney Houston - One Moment In Time(Grammy Awards Live)

Back in the 80's I bought everything Whitney Houston had out.  She's never sang anything I didn't like, but "One Moment in Time" is my all time favorite for many reasons.  My one moment in time will be the day I qualify for Kona Ironman World Championship.  My next moment in time will be the day I cross that finish line in Kona.....

Whitney Houston had such an awesome voice and amazing talent, it's so sad and tragic that she died at age 48.

RIP Whitney Houston (1963-2012)

This Strange Addiction

I ran into a fellow runner as I was running in the neighborhood this afternoon.  We are both training for the 1/2 marathon that takes place this Sunday.  She did a race last weekend, the one that I missed due to a stomach virus, so she was power walking to taper for this weekend.  I haven't run on anything besides the treadmill for the past week so I felt like I needed the outdoor run today on some hills.

We had a very short conversation since she was going in one direction and I was going in the other, but it got me to thinking about why I do these races.  Especially the long triathlon ones. (aka the Ironman)  She mentioned running in this same upcoming race last year.  I remember last year.  I was in major burn out from all the Ironman Canada training I had been doing all summer.  I haven't figured out how to continually train long and utilize the endurance I have for other races after competing in an Ironman.  I could do the physical part, but it's the mental part that I haven't been able to control.  The mental part is the most important part.

Also, Ironman training just trained my legs to run slow.  All that running on tired, dead legs after biking 50 - 100 miles or swimming for a couple of hours, then biking , then running.  Slow, tired, worn out legs.

So last year, six months after doing Ironman Canada, I was miserably facing this 1/2 marathon and cussing the Running Nazi for "talking me into" signing up. (she didn't really, but I have to blame someone, otherwise it all just doesn't make sense)   It's ironic that this year I was cussing her because she signed up early and didn't tell me. (can't wait to show the Running Nazi the bridesmaid dress I picked out for her.)  I signed up Tuesday and by Wednesday the race was full.  Barely made it!  Last year I would've jumped for joy that I didn't make it!  Guess I'm not burned out anymore.

As I was running my short four mile run today,  I was thinking about the total burn out I felt this time last year.  Even all through this past year, I have done a few races and not much training.  Why do I keep signing up?  I thought maybe it's just an addiction.  Maybe I have no control.  But what if I overcame the addiction and then didn't race or train anymore.  I don't think I would like that too much.  I love being fit.  I use to love biking and I do love how running makes me feel.  At first I wished I could just stop doing any of it and not feel bad that I'm not doing it anymore.  Then I realized it's not that I don't want to do it anymore.  I just want to be fast.  I use to love racing and training more when I was fast.  I would love it again if I could just get faster.

So during that run while I listened to sappy love songs on my ipod, I figured it all out.  I just need to get fast again.  Then I will love it all over again.   All that training - love swimming, love biking, love running for hours and hours and hours.  Love, love, love all the hours and hours and miles and miles.

It's not an addiction at all......

Ironman Triathlon - Never Give Up

This explains why I do what I do. It isn't necessarily because I want to anymore, it's because I have to.  I'm addicted.  It's my drug.
